" [openprojects]!forward.openprojects.net zsoldos.openprojects.net acknowledged end of net.burst. Fufie, they're two different architectural concepts... I'm not thinking of adding message-passing to Lisp itself, just wondering what a message-passing language that used SEXP would be like (method object) i.e., standard meaning of (foo bar) is not 'apply function foo with argument bar', but 'send to object foo message bar' because then you'd have way too many terminating parens that clutter your program smkl, isn't that always the case? :) (send :to obj :msg bar :args "hi world") ;) heh if you don't have terminators for every construct, then not [openprojects]Foreign OperKill: NickServ killed Dean (This nick is reserved by another user) oh well, just a random bit of core dumping back to serious hacking now... (as someone states in the first thread you mentioned) that'd be very hard to implement in c++ i think yes.. but as I said I seem to recall that I liked Qt's slot mechanism when I used it a few years back though it requires the moc-tool gtk-- uses templates for the signaling system, and thereby omits the need for a preprocessor the problem with c++ is that it's functions aren't first class citizens.. or one could just register functions directly the Java listener model might work in c++ what do you mean with 'first class citizens'? 04:30am in c/c++/java functions aren't real objects but just pointers to the memory.. they're not fully-featured objects ah yes i have been considering using guile as an extension language to build the gui with would it be better to construct the core eventhandling system in guile than in c++ then? [openprojects]!forward.openprojects.net Net break: irc.linux.com zsoldos.openprojects.net (Ping timeout) it might be, but it might also give overhead for frequently called objects if you should go c++ event happens -> convert to guile -> guile processing -> guile function -> convert to c++ -> c++ handling of event [openprojects]!forward.openprojects.net Net junction: sterling.openprojects.net zsoldos.openprojects.net [openprojects]!forward.openprojects.net Completed net.burst from zsoldos.openprojects.net. If it's really needing live interaction, then e-mail a request to meet on IRC. 10:00pm Ok lar1: now talk Yes, hcf, master of the force I need you to finish explaining yer db structure, tril which part do you understand? Umm That there are binary relations And you don't like to call them arrows well, most of them should be binary relations..some aren't you want the specific DB I made for the review, not my general philosophy of DB design, right? Correct. You gave me assess to the tunes DB is that the correct one? right... are you connected now? to tunes What table(s) apply to the review project? The DB confuses me :) hmm let me see OK well the ones that are specifically about review are: reviews, lang*,os*,vm*,and links. however, each review also links to "people" so you know who did the review news and glossary are totally unrelated. 10:10pm members is just who is in the tunes project (a subset of "people") There is some redundancy I see no Dave New is in people twice oh, redundancy in the data? the data is probably buggy that's because the database isn't in use yet just pretend there isn't any data :) I will fix the approiate parts when I start working. Or shall I create a new DB w/ the same structure? Then I have a group of tables to keep track of subprojects: project, projectmembers, subprojects, and maintainers. Tril: will each entry of the review have some sort of factual record? hcf: what do you mean? hcf:are you talking about differentiating "fact" from "the opinion of the reviewer"? Tril: yeah i'm also talkin about something the .lsm format hcf: If there is not one now it will be added lsm I don't know about hcf: in my db design I don't make any specific fields for "fact", no. But the "facts" can be gathered from official URL's that are in the reviews, as well as by the reader seeing what is common between the reviews made by different reviewers. I expect different reviewers to have different amount of objectivism so some may be all fact and some may be less. OK? hcf: What exactly about .lsm ? perhaps more like http://www.idiom.com/free-compilers/ for example: http://www.idiom.com/free-compilers/TOOL/CommonLi-1.html Tril: I belive a fact section should be added stuff like the categories and the lsm field thingies can be added later, that's why I made lots of binary relations, so more tables can be added with stuff like that. I don't want to design it ahead of time, without looking at a bunch of reviews and seeing what would be suitable. And that's also good for other people to discuss before implementing. 10:20pm lar1: so now you know which sections are for review, it has a very simple structure. At the top are "languages, oses, and vms" and at the bottom are "reviews, and links". Then there are six tables that show the relations between the top and bottom layers. Hmm Ok Oses only has id and name yes, and I assume languages and vms are the same do you have a question? I am thinking did you have a design in mind before you saw mine? No So you perform a join on oses and reviews? sure sure? Meaning it can be done or you do do it? um I'm not sure doing a join makes sense here You want the reviews with the same ID as the oses to be joined, no? uh holdon ok 10:30pm I guess I'm trying to understand the question How do you put the oses and the reviews togheter? If you mean the ID in the reviews table is the same ID as in the OSes table, then no, those ID's are separate, combining the id column in each table would make no sense. The osreviews table is what relates id's in the oses table to ids in the reviews table. That is, you can have multiple reviews for each OS. Ouchie (I suppose you could have a review of multiple OSes but that wasn't my plan) the point of the reviews table is that it contains the text of reviews for OSes languages and VMS because "text of a review" with "author of review" is the same structure (same for each of Os/Lang/Vm) What was the table that links the 2 again? I am on overload status in terms of how much my brain can do at onece I am talking two 2 frineds, looking at a page, talking to tril and hcf.... I don't reccomend doing so much at once osreviews Ok So RavenOS has id 1 and the 1st ravenos review has id 10 so in the osreview table osid would be 1 and reviewid 10? ya sounds good Ok, then no join is needed at all, right? I think I mean, well, you could create a table using join, that would have the name of the review, with the text of the review. But I'm not sure you can do that. The database is meant to be accessed a lot by programs, which may just access tables in order, instead of joining them. Make sense? 10:40pm I mean the name of the OS being reviewed Yes So my script will have to follow the tables to get from an OS to its review? select * from osreviews where (osid = ); then you iterate over that list and lookup the ids in reviews. I think pg supports nested selects well it sort of does Ok I belive I grok yer DB now Is the php3 package installed? php3 itself is installed php3 module for libpq is not When can you insall libpq? that's the funny thing.. libpq is also installed ? But not as a debian module. So I can't install the debian module for php3-pgsql because it depends on the debian module for libpq. I installed a later version of postgres not as a debian module. Uggg, this is a Bad Thing basically, I just havne't figured out wwhich way to try to interface them first. Umm So when do you think it will be ready for human consumption? [openprojects]Foreign OperKill: NickServ killed Trey (This nick is reserved by another user) it depends ... if I can find compatibility at one layer or other between the versions, it could be tonight Ok Let me know when and where I can read up on the lib I already told you that 10:50pm Its on the other box that I don't have access to until tommarow bespin:/usr/doc/php3/html/ref.pgsql.html Thanks oh, I guess you could try it now.. We can prominently link to it from the review page- but it won't go in the "TUNES Web Page" until it has version control and a plain-text version that means, it needs to be able to recover old versions.. (pgsql doesnt have this) and be readable by ASCII text only (it is possible using pg_dump but maybe not what Fare wants) Grrmmrrmrmm I am exercising restraint on commenting because there is logging in here lar1: If it's good, dont worry I can get you a URL without /~lar1 in it, is that what you worry about? Nah, worst comes to worst, I can get my 2rd dhs ;) s/2/3 well like I said I might work on the zope stuff So can I call my page the tunes review subproject page or will fare come at me with a knife? So then we'll have two ways to access the same database Whats the point of that? 11:30pm I don't know. But since we don't know which way will work better... I don't want to discourage you from your work because the zope might not work well.
