In a mail about communism, I wrote that the western economical policy in Russia was particularly stupid and opposite to any liberal economy: by definition of liberal economy, there is no need for western government to help investment in the private russian sector or any other industry: that only creates corruption. you are right. but what to do? rather, they should help with the infrastructure: most importantly, justice, then police, then schools, then hospitals, then routes, trains, etc 05:40pm how couls they help if they have no money? instead of spending a given $1M in "helping" industry, which will become $1M in corruption and mafia, they should spend that same $1M in fighting crime this creates the conditions for safe investment, and is a catalytic use of money, instead of a wasteful one .. fighting themselves :) indeed. Well, not completely. <_QZ> ok lets talk about tunes now :) QZ: read my latest paper? <_QZ> about tunes? I revamped the end of it yup http://tunes.org/~fare/tmp/ <_QZ> oh god Fare thanx <_QZ> why dont u write them in say ascii or html or soemthing Fare: and where is the source? ωνω SignOff Tril: #TUNES (Ping timeout for Tril[sloth.wcug.wwu.edu]) ωνω Tril [dem@sloth.wcug.wwu.edu] has joined #TUNES <_QZ> ya where is the source :) Fare: don't tell me you are writing dvi's :) <_QZ> whats the best postscript viewer for linux? _QZ: ps2ascii <_QZ> hehe <_QZ> oh kewl i even have that one 05:50pm <_QZ> ok how do i use it ghostview <_QZ> ghostview sucks, it has so much whitespace around the text that i have to have the window fullscreen to read the text yet it handles pictures, and is free... both very important considerations... check out the LSM (Linux Software Map)... 06:00pm http://www.linux.org/apps/lsm.html seems like 100 entries for a search of 'postscript' only 8 entries for a search of 'postscript viewer' 06:10pm "NULL programming language http://www.qzx.com/null.txt" is yours, QZ, correct? http://www.qzx.com/null.txt isn't very informative. seems like the old UISC concept, renamed, but there is nothing to prove, or disprove, this possibility. 06:20pm ωνω yery [ost@benetnash.ffke-campus.mipt.ru] has left #tunes [Started] <_QZ> malificus: u dont get out much do ya? ? <_QZ> NULL is a freakin joke oh 06:30pm do you remember hearing about ms cleartype? <_QZ> read the points <_QZ> yes i know of cleartype, apple invented it some 20+ years ago and ms is gonna patent it again :p i hadn't bothered reading very far on the list of null claims... <_QZ> :) Point 6: NULL programs are highly portable and totally machine independent. TUNES? nah. ;p some claims, such as 6, are within the realm of possibility. <_QZ> what about 4 <_QZ> or 12 4 is ok. 12, too. in terms of usic, i think some of the more 'out there' claims are somewhat reasonable. <_QZ> uh, ok :) 06:40pm <_QZ> hmm i should probably upgrade ghostview <_QZ> my copy is from 95 what don't you like about gv? if there is whitespace in your documents, complain to the document authors...not about gv... 06:50pm <_QZ> there is a 2" whitespace border around the text of every ps file margins... <_QZ> ya most every document has them... <_QZ> well the font rendering is so crappy that i have to have the text part magnified to atleast 5-6" wide to read it and then the window is almost 10" wide <_QZ> plus that 1" button bar on the left 07:00pm the font rendering is crappy? <_QZ> ya i've just installed gv under win98... <_QZ> the text looks like shit unless its big looking at a ps from the mach project... gs 5.03 gv 2.3 looks fine to me. if you don't like the borders...change the media type... how the ps would look on paper of that type... <_QZ> are u using gv or ghostview? gv == ghostview...? 07:20pm <_QZ> no no? <_QZ> no <_QZ> gv != ghostview <_QZ> i have both <_QZ> i can only get gv to read some ps files <_QZ> i have gv 2.9.4 <_QZ> ofcourse i only have gs 2.6.2 (4/19/95) 07:30pm ! i guess gv != ghostview. gv 3.5.8 seems current. ftp://ftpthep.physik.uni-mainz.de/pub/gv/unix/gv.history quite a few changes... 07:40pm <_QZ> This is version 3.5.8 of gv, an X11 ghostscript frontend based on <_QZ> Tim Theisen's ghostview 1.5. <_QZ> ok i installed gv 3.5.8 and it had the same problem as gv 2.9.4 but it let me fix it <_QZ> and gv 3.5.8 renders the ps exactly like ghostview so it must be ghostscripts fult <_QZ> fault 07:50pm .... 08:00pm <_QZ> wtf <_QZ> i have gs 2.6.2 (4/19/95) <_QZ> but lsm has gs 2.5.2 (1jan96) <_QZ> where did u get 5.x from? gs for what platform?... gs is put out by aladdin... so, of course, for the lastest versions, check there first... <_QZ> hmm <_QZ> there is no dns for them yes there is. not sure where, offhand, but there is. http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/index.html not the main site, but listed in their readme... perhaps a link from there, not that it is needed. <_QZ> hmm aladdin.com has dns but no ftp/www server 08:20pm <_QZ> thanks 08:30pm gs 5.50 is current <_QZ> ya thats what im getting now 08:40pm <_QZ> why does gs need jpeg/png libs? <_QZ> holy shit, aladdin doesnt believe in using directories in source code :) 08:50pm embedded images... and is no sub-directories a bad thing? :P <_QZ> i have a directory listing with 13 columns of 81 rows and 1 column with 70 rows. thats 1123 files in a single directory :) <_QZ> its really sad when i have to make rxvt fullscreen to see all the files .... and you extracted correctly?! <_QZ> uhh ya ok. 09:00pm i don't know. but after the first hundred or so, i'd definitely reconsider... 09:10pm <_QZ> man, this is giving me more warnings than all the programs i have ever compiled combined <_QZ> about 100 per .c file ! couldn't you have acquired a precompiled binary? and are you certain that you've extracted it correctly? 09:20pm <_QZ> if i hadnt extracted it correctly then it would not have compiled no, it would've compiled with errors ;p <_QZ> well i successfully compiled it <_QZ> so its obviouslt extracted correctly but does it work? those might've been warnings, and not errors. <_QZ> yes it works <_QZ> well i installed the fonts for 5.5 and it still looks like shit <_QZ> there we go <_QZ> i guess it helps if i install the fonts correctly :) <_QZ> no it has smoooooth text <_QZ> now 09:30pm i gather that you are happier with reading, now that you've got better fonts. still the whitespace problem? <_QZ> ya ya, which? <_QZ> but now that the fonts are smooth i can make the text smaller <_QZ> ya to the whitespace .... can you change the 'media' format? e.g. A4, 10x14, etc, paper sizes... <_QZ> ya 09:40pm does changing the media format help at all w/ regard to the whitespace problem? <_QZ> no :/ <_QZ> i just made it startup using .7 magnification to get the correct window size and then make it use 1.4 mag and it fills in the window without changing size then i suppose that the problem is with the document itself, setting the margins wider than you like them. if you print out, e.g., the first page of the document, the margins should proportionally match. onscreen and onprint. <_QZ> i dont want margins 09:50pm that's not your choice. you did not author the document. <_QZ> well thats the problem i have with it complain to the author. :) <_QZ> and i fixed it using that magnification ps is really meant to be printed. dps is meant to be virtualized. <_QZ> Fare: mal says i should bitch to YOU about YOUR lame .ps file :) my lame ps file? what ps file? <_QZ> wasnt talking to u :) :p oops, fare's :) ωνω Kor [kor@pm-ppp174.triton.net] has joined #tunes <_QZ> hola kor yeah, take your gripes to fare. ωνω dino [dino@pm-ppp167.triton.net] has joined #tunes hi QZ hellos hello kor, hello dino. <_QZ> why is it that u 2 always join at the same time?
