Sometimes, the rest of the world does, however. hey fare, what Linux dist do you use? something like RH 5.0 on steroids maybe even 5.1 on steroids which is Manhattan? I dunno, I've only used slackware and debian lately 02:20pm anyone good at theoretical CS, around? maybe what did you have in mind? help me with that fscking article I'm writing. 02:30pm or more generally, talking theory metaprogramming, reflection? among other things I can give it a try :) btw, did you read my previous article? do you have an account on bespin? yup ~fare/fare/lambdaND.tex (together with *.sty, *.cls, *.bib) compiles under tetex .html? html won't do, unless you run latex2html or so I'll be sure to install all this latex, bibtex, etc when I install Debian 2.1.. :) (hevea gives very bad results on this one) what are you using? an older, patched-up, slackware.. whoa, cool, someone at Debian got all these math programs to compile (I never could :) 02:40pm math programs? btw, when I register in inquisitive websites, I use president@whitehouse.gov as email. Maybe that'll help spam go out! haha what's the birthdate of Mr Prez? Yeah, there's all these Maple/Mathematica clones, which I'd like to have but can't compile. And I don't want that kind of thing bad enough to pay for Maple or Mathematica :) Clinton, I dunno.. I'm just sick of hearing about him. They don't talk about his personal life all the time in France, do they? did he have sex with his wife? or is she the only woman in the states to not have had this dubious priviledge? Fare: at least once, producing chelsea that's not for certain maybe that was an experimental mistake π Fare/#Tunes really hates these "website designers" who put ugly small fonts on their site -- that's unreadable! or ugly colors like yellow on white let's go back to lynx! hey, I wonder hwat sirc is? Scheme-based irc? what i dont like is, "click here for more" wherein "here" is the anchor text I AM using lynx, as much as possible to know what the link is for, one much read the paragraph around the link not just the link text I'm considering using w3, once I understand how to not stop the whole of XEmacs while browsing... maybe you can't not stop it I wonder if Grail is any good now it's not multithreaded, by I've heard there were ways to have it smoother than just "hanging" Grail? heh, queso is included in Debian :) the russian stuff? queso? queso is an os detector at http://www.apostols.org/projectz/queso/ 02:50pm There was a web browser called Grail. I think it was written in Python. oh When I tried it, it had most of what netscape has, just slower there's also MMM, written in ocaml ah oh yeah, I gotta try CAML do you know what bib ref to cite about deBruijn indices, and/or lambda-calculus as a graph-reduction calculus? 03:00pm nope π Fare/#Tunes considers buying a NetWinder or a Qube, or something like that, for his home LAN what are those, hubs? servers based on Linux ask freshmeat about them how many computers you got there? let's see. What do you count as a computer? is a HP28 a computer, to you? uhhh nah, that's a calculator I got one 6x86@150MHz; my dad got a PII300; my mom a PBG3 series; my sister the old Mac68k; my dad also got this old T2400CT laptop, and I borrowed a T4700CT from work, as well as a DELL laptop. and they're all on the net? What's a PBG3 anyway? PowerBook G3 crap stuff from Apple runs under MockAss So you've got a 150 (I have a P133).. that means you won't like bloated shit too much :) I hate it when people tell me my new computer is too old 03:10pm I love bloated shit -- when it's flushed down the toilet, as it deserves. ok, I've downloaded enough of Debian to install it, I think. GCC, BitchX, Lynx, NcFTP, mail stuff.. 03:20pm hey, can I get mozilla without java now? dammit, the net is slowing down! you forogt LaTeX... tcn is *always* w/o java (until someone integrates Kaffe or such in it) cool, mozilla is included in debian.. 3 megs, cool. I'll get latex later See ya in a bit, when I get debian installed. maybe I should get debian, when it's stable again... since when is redhat stable? I hope debian 2.1 isn't too unstable :) 03:30pm ωνω SignOff tcn: #TUNES (Leaving) redhat has always been stable -- mostly no problem installing. well, not so true -- like sendmail hanging for DNS if you didn't install everything, or such also, RH5.2 won't install on these old Toshibas, and has missing files for french localization but 5.0 was quite stable. 03:40pm elmz oops 03:50pm ωνω Beholder [beholder@ppp-066.m2-2.sub.ican.net] has joined #tunes hoy Beholder Hello bonjour, Beholder So how is everyone tonight? 04:00pm i'm peechy, how are you? UniOS and Tunes... my school donated a server. Did Tril tell you? no, he didn't. Your school? What scholol is that? How did you convince them? I guess RH5.1 is secure, if you configure it well, and do security upgrades We have a fairly advanced networking structure at Cambrain College (Ontario, Canada), so I decided to ask if I could get a server put up before the firewall. They said I'd have to get faculty support, and the guy I asked already had a Red Hat box running, so he's letting me use his. I should have it by Friday. PII-333 128mb RAM, 6.4 G storage, 2 Mbps Fiber connection. Sweet little thing :) What Linux do you run? I want something similar to bespin or yours RH5.1 on steroids 04:20pm Actually the machine is being re-installed (due to changing all the hardware to the new set), and we're putting RH 5.2 on The college only uses 4 ip addresses (in the entire class C they own), so I think I can get about 5 IP's without a problem, if it's necessary ωνω yery [ost@benetnash.ffke-campus.mipt.ru] has joined #Tunes only 4 IP addresses? like, masquerading a lot? I've only ever used slakware, so I'm not too familar with RH RH is mucho better than slackware I was a SLS then slackware user, long ago The whole damn college (400+ computers) is run through a single firewall (specially modified, nearly unhackable freeBSD box) good Every single packet runs through the firewall, into a single IP. The other 3 IP's are currently allocated for my box, the cambrian Web page, and someone elses box cambrian web page? http://www.cambrianc.on.ca/ The web server has to be outside the firewall ok what college is that? So does the box, otherwise we have very very little access to anything (almost every port is shutdown from the outside) will the server remain when you leave? can you cvs check{in,out} ??? Yes, the server will remain mine, as I will be concidered "Cambrian Exceptional Student" Like I said, nothing through the firewall... thats why I positioned the box outside the firewall ouch, so you couldn't access bespin 's CVS stuff? Nope, I can't do anything when I am there. Thats why I want this box :) and between that box and the rest of the college? I can telnet into the box (the Telnet port is open) and then telnet to bespin (telneting directly to bespin wouldn't work) you can use fwprc :) fwprc? 04:30pm ωνω NetSplit: carter.openprojects.net split from lucas.openprojects.net [04:32pm] ωνω BitchX: Press Ctrl-F to see who left Ctrl-E to change to [carter.openprojects.net] ωνω Netjoined: carter.openprojects.net lucas.openprojects.net ωνω Fare [rideaufr@esmeralda.enst.fr] has joined #TUNES ωνω hcf [nef@escher.sdi.agate.net] has joined #TUNES ωνω Beholder [beholder@ppp-066.m2-2.sub.ican.net] has joined #TUNES ωνω abi [nef@bespin.ml.org] has joined #TUNES ωνω yery [ost@benetnash.ffke-campus.mipt.ru] has joined #TUNES ωνω ServerMode/#TUNES [+o Fare] by koontz.openprojects.net π Beholder/#tunes believes after 3 years of running 95, he almost knows how to get it running stable the best way to get it stable is to not run it! fwprc is linux script/perl/c programs? He seems to be developing a similar system to Tunes (minus the OS part) Prism? not yet I'm backlogged in e-mail can you telnet outside? or even, just to that open machine? if yes, then, you can have full internet access on your machine! When I am inside the college I can telnet out, but I cannot telnet into any machine beyond the firewall. So I guess port 21 is open also you mean, port 23 well, then you can access the whole internet from a machine inside, with fwprc Yes 23 :) you could do reverse firewall-piercing, too, but then it's more dangerous and I haven't really tested it, either, but it should work How does this technique work? 04:50pm why don't you first READ, then ask? ωνω SignOff yery: #TUNES (Ping timeout for yery[benetnash.ffke-campus.mipt.ru]) you think IRC is a faster, cheaper, more reliable, didactically better way to, express technical things than HOWTO??? ωνω yery [ost@benetnash.ffke-campus.mipt.ru] has joined #Tunes yery: hello! hello! do you know the TUNES project already? I was looking at the minor device numbers. Each ide drive gets 64 minor numbers for its partitions before the next ide drive starts. all ide drives are major 3 heheeh but there is no known partitioning scheme that supports 64parts/drive (Actually, I wonder if you could pull that off with logical...) I'm sure fdisk can do it, but I dont' want to type that many in well not sure how many parts logical supports if logical cant do it then it cant be done because Sun/BSD support 8 09:00pm ok, I typed them in.. cfdisk is glitching up when I get to /dev/hdb63 heh cfdisk only lets me create 64 total partitions on the drive (primaries+extended+logicals) I ran fdisk and it said "warning deleting partitions after 60" only :) Yeah I thought so you cant get 64 parts I can get 63 though. the 64th only can't be used because it has to be for the "extended" dummy partition Only 1.5 hours left to download debian and that does use up all 64 minur numbers woohoo ωνω yery [ost@benetnash.ffke-campus.mipt.ru] has joined #tunes that's a lot of very small partitions :) tcn does it install and let you configure the packages while they are downloading? multithreaded?
